Digital platforms are beginning to emerge as key gateways to the metaverse. Currently, virtual real estate investments can bear similarities to physical real estate, with the ability to claim ownership, fractionalize parcels, or “develop” income-generating components such as shops or event spaces. At the same time, questions of interoperability, consumer adoption, and market volatility have created barriers to execution; however, by all metrics, interest in the metaverse still continues to rise. In the long term, the ability to create true value through digital land and the ability to sustain a digital labor economy will be crucial for these platforms to endure.
